eagle

eagles live in high places and in some cultures have been associated with gods. if an eagle appears in a dream, it may act as a messenger from a helpful source in your unconscious. eagles have strong wings, so they could represent something to lift you, perhaps out of a bad situation. in mythology, an eagle and snake together represent a conflict of opposites. in dreams, it could represent an internal conflict of opposites (ie. conscious/unconscious, masculine/feminine, etc.). (ackroyd)

ear

seeing an ear in a dream might be a message from your unconscious, telling you to listen to your inner self. (ackroyd)

Freud: the ear represents the vagina. (ackroyd)

earth

earth may represent a need for you to 'keep your feet on the ground.' it can also represent Mother Earth, who in turn can also represent your own mother. both mothers are capable of bringing life into the world, and in some aspects both are capable of taking life away. (ackroyd)

if you see the planet earth floating in space, that could symbolize your true self, whole and unrealized. (ackroyd)

earthquake

an earthquake could represent something shaky in your real life. are you having problems at work or with a relationship? perhaps you are repressing something in your unconscious and in doing so have created an imbalance in your life. (ackroyd)

as earth represents mother, shaking of the earth could mean a disruption in your relationship with your mother (ie. independence, her death, etc.). (ackroyd)

eating

feeling hunger in dreams often means a part of you is unfulfilled. eating is a way to fill that void. eating could also illustrate your ability to sustain yourself, like your parents, the first people to nourish you, did. feeding yourself and being satisfied by it means that you are able to take care of yourself. dreams about eating also point to issues about power and control. (pliskin)

there may be something (an idea or an attitude) that you need to 'digest', or incorporate into your self to become more whole. (ackroyd)

egg

an egg can symbolize something new in life, a new beginning... for example a new job, a new baby, etc. (ackroyd)

elephant

Jung: an elephant symbolizes the self. (ackroyd)

in India, it is believed that elephants have sacred power. the Hindu god Ganesha is an elephant who removes obstacles. Hindus would say that seeing an elephant in a dream represents a power that is within you that can help you clear obstacles on the way to your goals. (ackroyd)

emptiness/empty

Freud: an empty container represents the womb. Freud also thought that whatever is empty in the dream, be it a room or a house, can represent your self and own feeling of emptiness. when one represses something, nothing usually replaces it, and this creates a void within the self. (ackroyd)

alternately, something that is empty can symbolize potential. 'where there is nothing, there is room for anything.' so it is with the unconscious; it can be thought of as an empty container, but in time can contain everything necessary for growth. (ackroyd)

enemy

an enemy can represent something within yourself, like an inner conflict that is unresolved. it could also be a part of your self that has been neglected (Jung's 'shadow'). (ackroyd)

escape

escaping in a dream may symbolize your liberation from a restricting situation or attitude in real life. it could also mean you're avoiding some problem. (ackroyd)

evening

signifies middle or old age, or death (end of day = end of life). (ackroyd)

evil

evil manifestations almost always represent something within yourself, as there is a little evil in everybody. all destructive attitudes (anger, hate, etc.) may rise up from the unconscious at times, after being repressed because they are socially unacceptable. accept these attitudes to some extent, so you can control them. (ackroyd)

examination

see studying.

excrement

Freud: feces = common in women's dreams, represent penis or a baby. (ackroyd)

dreaming about crap (literally) could symbolize something in present life you need to rid yourself of (job, relationship, etc.). it could also stand for something from your past that you've repressed because it caused anxiety. feces could also signify something you disapprove of in life, be it physical or mental. finally, it could represent money (being 'filthy rich'). (ackroyd)

exit

symbolizes death. (ackroyd)

see also door, escape, death.

eye

the eye symbolizes knowledge and perception. if someone in your dream has a third eye, or one eye like a cyclops, they could a guru with an inner source of wisdom. (ackroyd)

Freud: the eye represents the superego, which is the censor over your thoughts and actions. in essence the eye in the dream is the 'eye of god.'. (ackroyd)

an eye could also signify how you look at things, mainly yourself and others, depending on how the eye looks (sad, irritated, etc.). (ackroyd)
